Integrative Medicine

Integrative medicine is a holistic, “whole-person” approach to healthcare that integrates complementary, evidence-based therapies with conventional medical care.  Evidence-based means clinically proven and backed up by objective, non-biased evidence.

With a focus on treating not only the body, but also the mind and spirit, integrative medicine draws on a wide range of different healing modalities to maximize each person’s ability to return to full health.  The idea is that the body has its own innate healing ability, which simply needs to be awakened in order to promote optimal health and well-being.

In conjunction with conventional medicine, a number of complementary therapies and treatments may be used or recommended as follows:• Acupuncture

• Yoga
• Massage
• Rolfing
• Chiropractic care
• Meditation
• Guided imagery
• Biofeedback
• Music therapy
• Dietary remedies
• Herbal remedies
• Nutritional supplements

At Pedre Integrative Health, we recognize that each person is unique, so we design a program of treatment that is tailored to each individual’s needs.

Meet Dr. Pedre

Dr. Vincent M. Pedre III was born to Cuban parents in Miami, FL.  Always an overachiever, he forewent a career as a concert pianist (in which he excelled as a teenager) to become a doctor.  To this effect he completed his premed training at Cornell University in 1995, where he was honored as a Cornell National Scholar, receiving a B.A. in Biology with Distinction in all subjects, and graduating Phi Beta Kappa.  He went on to receive his M.D. from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1999, which he attended with a half-tuition scholarship awarded by the board of trustees for his excellent work as an undergraduate.  Thereafter, his training brought him to New York City, where he completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 2002.

September 11, 2001 was a day that touched the hearts and souls of this country, this city, and that of Dr. Pedre.  Having completed his residency in the aftermath of 9/11 and feeling a strong social obligation at the time, Dr. Pedre dedicated a year to researching the potentially toxic effects of the environmental pollutants on the recovery workers following this great tragedy.  “The World Trade Center Worker and Volunteer Medical Screening Program,” which is ongoing at Mount Sinai Hospital in the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine, is an environmental medicine community project primarily focused on studying respiratory and psychiatric disease as a consequence of the disaster.

Since then, Dr. Pedre changed his career path to bring his dream of creating the ideal medical practice to fruition.  Convinced that the ideal method of practicing medicine combines the strengths of both Eastern and Western methodology, Dr. Pedre attended a yoga teacher-training in 2002 to broaden his knowledge of Eastern philosophy, meditation and this ancient healing art.  At a time when the business environment of medicine is daunting to most practitioners, he had the courage and vision to start his own practice.  Dr. Pedre could not find his dream in any existing practice, and instead of settling for less he made his vision reality and created Pedre Integrative Health in July 2004.  To bring in the broadest perspective and choices to his patients, he underwent additional specialty training in Medical Acupuncture in 2003-4, which he has incorporated into his practice.

Dr. Pedre is an avid reader, and is continuously seeking to expand his  knowledge of medicine by attending CME courses in a variety of topics.

He brings a unified perspective into his approach to healthcare issues as he strives to combine the best of Western medicine with an understanding and integration of complementary Eastern approaches to health and well-being.  This innovative branch of medicine is coming to be known as Integrative Medicine.  It strives to maintain an evidence-based approach to the care of the patient, while still treating each person as a unique whole individual with not only physical, but also mental and spiritual needs.  On any given day, Dr. Pedre may prescribe a combination of medications, natural remedies, vitamins and supplements as well as stress-reducing techniques, such as yoga and meditation.

Dr. Pedre is a Board-Certified Internist who practices in the Upper East Side of Manhattan.  He has been in private practice for over 3 years now.  He is fluent in Spanish.  He maintains hospital privileges and is voluntary faculty at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he holds the title of Clinical Instructor in Medicine.  His practice is located at 120 E. 56 STREET, SUITE 530, NEW YORK, NY 10022.  (212) 860-8300.  Any questions may be addressed to drpedre@pedremd.com.

Maintain
         We strive to maintain your health in balance and instruct you on how to do so.

        Restore
              We help you restore your health when an acute medical condition has knocked it off balance.

We at Pedre Integrative Health want to make navigating the occasional turbulent waters of your health as seamless and smooth as possible.  In a city like New York, the options are endless and daunting.  Let Dr. Pedre be your primary care and integrative medicine expert.  A lot of medical issues, from physical to psychological, can be taken care of without a specialist; however, if your issue(s) require(s) specialty care, we are connected with some of the best specialists in the city.  Dr. Pedre makes it his job to seek out and find the best referrals for his patients.

We provide comprehensive healthcare for adults 18 and older, including general health screenings, physical exams, blood tests, screening for sexually-transmitted diseases, preventive immunizations, treatment of a broad variety of acute and chronic medical conditions, travel consultations, and coordination of care with some of the best specialists in the city for the advanced management of complex diseases.

How Dr. Pedre does Medicine:

“I believe that the way I treat a patient should be the same way I would want a family member treated by their doctor.  I use the same philosophy when screening for specialists.  My number one criteria is: Would I send a loved one to see this specialist?  In other words, would I entrust the care of a family member to this specialist.  This is my care philosophy and how I approach medicine.  Everything else follows from there.”

My goal is to be personal, personable, and approachable.

Personal
         The way medical care was meant to be.

    Personable
             Because there’s enough seriousness in life as it is.

      Approachable
               Because your doctor should be easy to reach and non-intimidating.

“In a time when medical care has taken on a factory-style assembly line mentality, I have taken great efforts in my practice to preserve the integrity of the doctor-patient relationship as it was meant to be.  That is why I have decided to incorporate the model of the micropractice (create hyperlink) in medicine as the way to structure my practice, because we don’t need more bureaucracy in medicine.

With this in mind, all your appointments will be with me so that we may get to know each other in a way that is most beneficial for your overall health and well-being.  Understanding that most of my patients are busy professionals, I do my best to value your time as much as I value my own by staying on time.  I ask that you do the same.  And most importantly, the focus of my practice is on you (the patient) and providing the best quality, most up-to-date, evidence-based healthcare possible.

You may be surprised that I don’t wear a white coat.  There are differing opinions on the matter, but at one end is the belief that the white coat conveys authority, whereas at the other end that it may convey excessive formality.  In my opinion, white coats create separation, whereas my goal is to break down barriers to communication.  I am human just like the rest of us, and until I can find a good reason to wear a white coat, I won’t.  I strive to make our interaction as interconnected as possible so that you can relate to me as a person, the same way you want me to relate to you.”

What is a Micropractice?

The idea for simplifying medicine and a patient’s interaction with the healthcare system came from the Institute for Health Care Improvement.  As a solution to some of the problems facing both doctors running a medical practice and patients seeking access to healthcare, a new concept has evolved for improving the quality of the patient care experience.  This is how the idea of the IDEAL MICRO PRACTICE evolved.

A Micropractice is “a very low overhead, high technology practice capable of providing safe, effective, patient-centered, efficient, timely, and equitable care.” (www.idealmicropractice.com)

In a nutshell, this is the micropractice in medicine.  Rather than running a large operation on the healthcare treadmill, keeping up with costs by being forced to see more and more patients for less and less time, suffering loss of quality, this model allows the doctor to regain the magic of being a doctor once again and take better care of his or her patients.  Both doctors and patients win.  The choice is obvious.  Keeping a practice small makes for a better experience all around.

Why a Micropractice?

For several simple reasons:

1)    The Medical system has become too complicated, bureaucratic and expensive.  Who needs another layer of bureaucracy?
2)    Quality care can once again be provided;
3)    More time can be devoted to each patient visit;
4)    Same-day appointments are easy to offer;
5)    Thus enhancing the patient-doctor interaction;
6)    Making medical care patient-centered once again;
7)    And creating greater trust and a better healthcare partnership between doctor and patient.

Eliminate
         Barriers to communication;

    Make Time
             For meaningful interactions;

      Invest
               In the art and science of medicine.
